The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted human lives all over the word, causing social fear, civil anxiety, economic instability and political confusion.
Many people have lost their lives and many economies are struggling. We are yet to see the peak of the pandemic and its effects on our future lives. At the same time countries battling the pandemic, face a very difficult choice - regulate the virus spread and reduce number of deaths by controlling population movement risking economic stagnation, degrading people’s mental health, and impacting essential services.
This global pandemic has devastating local impact. Countries are facing recessions as local businesses are failing due to social lockdowns and Individuals are fronting unprecedented strains on their personal lives as they are confined to limited locations and narrow social interaction over indefinite periods.
These crucial moments academia needs to play a principal role standing on the side of the rest of society. UU Innovation, makes a step up keeping the door between our society and academy open, sustaining a strong communication stream between the two. MAY day for Crisis is a platform that has a main goal to identify relevant research and individual interests by all university’s researchers and employee’s introducing solutions, discussions and map proposals which can bring up solutions to COVID- 19 pandemic
By identifying some of the main challenges that the society needs, UU Innovation has identified four main themes (Society, Health, Technology and Economy) that we should start looking through; and under those, a number of subcategories.
The ambition is to initiate a digital Think Tank split in different channels, and depending on each channel’s focus, build up teams of multidisciplinary skills, initiate projects together with external actors, identify relevant funding opportunities, and deliver innovative solutions to the society.
With onside assistance and coordination by UU Innovation, all stakeholders will be clustered in digital groups and at second second phase matched with external actors. The goal is to organize a short MAY-Days for crisis series relevant to the thematic categories.
UU Innovation will be coordinating the digital channels and in some cases finance project proposals may come out. Our goal to gather representatives from academia (in first hand UU), public and private sector and non-profit organizations, work on creative ideas and develop concepts which will bring progress in the ongoing battle. In this critical moment, our task is to work altogether and initiate solutions to one of the biggest crises of our lifetime. Therefore, a broad participation of employees of Uppsala University is important.
